Holiness is a state of purity that is connected to God. The word Holy represents the process of being sanctified. The Hebrew word for Holiness is qodesh which means apartness, sacredness, and separateness. Sanctify in Hebrew is Qadash which means to consecrate, dedicate, prepare, be hallowed, be holy and be sanctified. The word Holiness is seen throughout the bible from Genesis to Revelation. However, we see Holiness in a very distinct and yet having some similarities in both books. In the Old Testament the word Holiness refers to the Holiness of God; He is Absolute and majestic. We see places and objects of Holiness, such as the tabernacle and the items found within. We see the Levite Priests who were set apart for the purpose of serving in the tabernacle. The priests were to follow the commandments and statues given to them. The only way a person could become cleansed from sin was to offer a sacrifice for their sin. They would bring an animal of sacrifice to the priest and the priest would have to slash the animal’s neck and drain the blood. Once the blood was drained the priest had to go through all the rituals in the tabernacle to apply the blood to the mercy-seat for the atonement of the person sins. There are many scripture references regarding Holiness in the books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy. Judaism refers to this as the laws of forbidden relations and the laws of forbidden food. Still today Jewish people practice Kosher living and do not eat any foods that violate their ceremonial laws. In the New Testament we are holy because of the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus. He took all our sin and sickness upon Him on the cross; and we are purified through the shedding of His blood. We no longer need to have a priest sacrifice an animal to atone for our sins because we whom have accepted Jesus have had His righteous imputed into us. We have His Holy Spirit dwelling in us, leading us through the process of sanctification to grow in holiness, for God is Holy; We have been redeemed by the sacrifice of Jesus. It is now within our spirit to crave the things of God and our will is now turned to be obedient to our Heavenly Father. We want to be made into His image, which is Holy. If we do fall into any sin we only need to turn away from it and ask our Lord for forgiveness.
We have discovered that Holiness is seen throughout the bible but what does that mean for us as believers? God is so holy that when He has revealed Himself to some they have fainted or even died. Is it possible for us as Christian to obtain a holiness that is so pure that we can have the blessing of standing in His presence? Are we worthy enough to be in such a position? We are worthy; we as born again blood bought believers are filled with His Spirit. We have been purchased with the blood of Jesus and His righteous now dwells in our spirit. Those who call Jesus Lord and Saviour now have His Holy Spirit dwelling in them; they are the Saints of Christ. We were chosen by the Lord to be called out of the world for His purpose. We are set apart and through His son and repentance of our sin, we can approach our Heavenly Father. We are sanctified through the work of His Holy Spirit. This is an ongoing process from the time we accept the Lord into our lives, until the day we depart from this earthly realm. We as followers of Christ become holy by setting ourselves apart and not partaking in worldly ideals or idols. We are to study and hide His word in our heart; so that we may be transformed into His image.
We the Saints of the almighty God must obey our Father, His Son and the Holy Spirit; If we are to grow in Christ and His purity. We must always follow His voice and the written word of His Holy Spirit, the Bible. We must seek Him first in all that we do. It is His will for us to be blessed in all areas of our lives, but we must adhere to His statures and ordinances; in order to grow into His image to attain holiness; we must be diligent in all aspects of our lives. It pleases the Father when we are obedient to His will. When we follow Christ we grow in the fruit of the Spirit and it becomes evident to those around us. It is through His Spirit that we are able to grow into His likeness and His attributes to become a better witness for the cause of Christ. To become holier we must surrender our will and allow the Spirit to do the work in us. We must be obedient to our Lord to remain as His Holy Disciple. Amen
